The glitter polishes with the smaller bits (I love China Glaze's "Ruby Pumps" over black polish ridiculously much) look subtler and more refined to me. I also sometimes go with a glitter gradient in a gloss or matte finish.Whenever I use glitter nail polish, I make sure to let it dry a lot before applying topcoat but no matter what, some glitter transfers onto the topcoat brush.
